Laslett family history
William and Emma (Solly formally Solley) Laslett of Felderland Farm
This page is a work in progress. William Laslett was such a common name in 1831/2 and the practice of naming father and son with the same name adds to the problem of sorting out who is who. What we do have is the certificate for William's marriage to Emma.
William and Emma's marriage was solemized on the 28th February 1876 in the Parish Church, Worth, in the county of Kent.
Their wedding certificate states William's age as 45, Condition Widower, Profession Farmer, Residence at the time of Marriage Woodnesborough, Father's Name and Surname William Laslett Rank or Profession of Father Farmer.
Emma Solly 32 Condition Widow, Residence at the time of Marriage Worth, Father's name and Surname Albert Solly, Rank or Profession of Father Farmer.
Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, by Licence by me Sydney Smith
In Presence of us Alfred Solley, Mary Ann Solly (Albert's daughter Emma's sister -- see below) (Alfred Solley in Upper Paramour St. with Hanna now 90)
Emma Solly
I don't know who William's mother was.
The groom's father was William Laslett (as stated in his wedding certificate) possibly William Laslett married to Elizabeth Dilnot?
OR
If William's father had not been a William Laslett (as his Wedding Certificate states) then Charles and Mary of Richborough had a William in 1831/2 who at his death was said to be 'of Worth'.
That would mean that this William married again after his first wife Mary was buried at Woodnesborough on 24 March 1875. 1875 is the year before William's second marriage to Emma in 1876. But then where would his children by his first wife be 1881? William Norris had died young. (Norris is a name used later by William and Emma for their first son's middle name) Walter Thomas - baptised at Woodnesborough on 14 December 1856. Linen & Sack Weaver. In 1881 lived in The Street, Woodnesborough with his sisters Harriett & Eliza. By 1876 he is 20 years old. (there is no mention of a sister Harriet on the Charles and Mary page)
HOWEVER, we also have a Walter Thomas son of William who is a son of William and Elizabeth Dilnot --- [Walter Thomas - continued to live in Peacock House after father moved to Worth. Married. Linen Weaver. Kellys Directory of Kent Surrey & Sussex 1915 identifies Walter as "Sack, Rick, Sail, Linen, Rope & Twine Manufacturer. Hop Grower & Farmer; and at Cattle Market, Sandwich. Captain in the volunteers. Thought not to have had children.]This Walter has two Aunts - Harriet and Eliza - whom he could have lived with.
This Williams death in 1899 would mean he would be alive for the 1891 census but not in the 1901 census. That ties in with the info we have for William married to Emma below.
These two records for Walter Thomas
suggest there is a muddle to be sorted out here.
As Walter's trade is a weaver - the same as the the Dilnot family - I would suggest that Walter Thomas Laslett is the grandson of William Laslett of Woodnesborough who married Elizabeth Dilnot (her father was a weaver) and not a grandson of Charles Laslett of Richborough who married Mary Hellier.
Is it possible that this is a record of William's first marriage that is misplaced by being put on the Charles and Mary page?
The bride's father was Albert Solly. (and Solley (?) - see below) The Solly/Solley family is a well established and large Ash family with many branches that have been living in Kent for hundreds of years -- see http://www.sole.org.uk
At some stage before 1881 William and Emma - rented Felderland Farm in Worth from the Henderson Family
In the 1881 census William and Emma are at Felderland Farm have three children Emily 3, Edith 1 and baby John

The Internet also has references to a Leo Laslett - as a son of William and Emma
Lillian Mary DEVESON was born 17 AUG 1880 in Eastry, Kent, and died 1939. She married Leo LASLETT 1913 in Karachi, India, son of William LASLETT and Emma SOLLY. He was born 1886. -- Rootsweb -- if he was born in 1886 it seems strange that he is not listed as living with them in 1891 when he would have been just 5 years old.
There are a lot of William Lasletts in our family history and it is quite confusing establishing who belongs to who and who is related to whom.
Charles and Mary Laslett of Richborough
Charles Horn Laslett was born at Woodnesborough and baptised at Ash on 30 April 1804. He was the third son of John Laslett, a Yeoman of Hoden Farm Ash, and his wife Elizabeth Laslett née Horn (page 37).
Farmer and fruiterer of Richborough.
Married Mary Hellier, spinster, of St Peters Sandwich by banns at St Peters Sandwich on 20 June 1837.
Charles died on 12 December 1865.

Also on the same page in rootsweb:
Frederick John DEVESON was born 8 DEC 1881 in Woodnesborough, Kent, England. He married Edith Mary LASLETT 1908 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, daughter of William LASLETT and Emma SOLLY. She was born 24 NOV 1879.
Solly and Solley are old Kent names -- read A CORNER OF KENT a History of Ash near Sandwich where there are many references to the Solly family. Indeed the at the end of the book the author says:- "Of the family of Solly the entries of baptisms at Ash alone amount to 292, of marriages to 104, and of burials to 176, exceeding those of any other in the register, except, perhaps, that of Lacy."
(See this page in the Sole website where there are details of a dispute over the will of Albert's brother (?) Charles Giles Solley of Staple in Kent.)
There have been Lasletts living in Woodnesborough since 1610 although recorded by many names -- Lasy, Lacie, Lasley, Lastly (or Lascly), Lacely, Lasly, Lacelet, Laslet, Laslett. see John and wives John was baptised at Harbledown (see Gordon's A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LASLETT FAMILY) - son of Charles and Agnis son of Roger - Roger was probably born at Nantwich in Cheshire I can't find many old English names that start with Las or Lac. Although there is the old name de Lancelyn. Could John have been part of the Lancelyn family?
"The first record of Bebingtons existence is recorded in 1090 when Hugh de Boidele confirms the
possession of Great Bebbington and Poulton to Robert de Lancelyn. After this the manor along with its
neighbour Spital, descends through the Lancelyn family to the 16th century where it is passed by
marriage to the Greene family. The marriage between the Elizabeth Lancelyn and Randle Greene took
place in 1570. Randle subsequently became Lord of Poulton Lancelyn and Bebbington in right of his wife.
Two centuries later the family line died out. In 1792 a junior branch of the family, the "Kents" who were
well known in Congleton Cheshire for some time, assumed the name of the family and their coat of arms
of the Greene family. " -- Old Wirral
Are the Lasletts the Lancelyn 'Kents" or to put it the other way around are the Lasletts the junior Kent branch of the Lancelyn family?
Gordon's document has a reference to some Woodnesborough Laslett's moving to another 'Poulton' Farm in Ash.
Although Poulton is not an unusual English name it seems.
The Richard Laslett who was born in 1739 and his descendants had Bossington Farm many more years than 100 years. His son, Richard (born 1772) and his grandson, George (born 1796) had Hole Farm over 50 years. Richard (born 1772) and his son Leonard, had Wingham Farm and Appleton Farm 78 years. Richard (born 1772) and his son Anthony, had Dene Farm for 78 years. Lasletts have cultivated as their own freehold property Hoden Farm, Ash, near Sandwich, 300 years. There are at the present day, Lasletts still farming lands at Woodnesborough. Our descent we trace from John Laslett (born 1630), farming lands at Woodnesborough. All our ancestors from the one mentioned were without exception farmers.
Wingham Barton Manor This is not the Barton that Emma grew up in that was Barton Farm in Worth
Eric Laslett (Great Grandson of William and Emma) lived in many places when growing up but he remembers when he was a lad walking from his Grandmothers house in Woodnesborough Road, Sandwich, where his mother Maff grew up, to Aunt Emilly's sweet shop in No1 Links Cottages where Emily lived with her Mother Emma (his great Grandmother). He remembers Emma in her stiff black dress and that Aunt Emilly had a stammer and would look up to the ceiling when she spoke. His favourite sweets were Emiliy's gobstoppers.
At that time his Grandfather lived in Finglesham and would occasionally take him by pony and trap to Deal.
