Gardening diary - our weekly guide and topical tips for your English country garden and allotment.

Week forty September 30th - October 7th

If you want an 'instant' lawn then October is the best month for laying turf. Apart from planting out spring cabbage and Japanese onion sets, October in the kitchen garden is mainly a matter of cropping, storing, clearing and preparing the ground for winter digging. Newly planted trees and shrubs may still need copious watering if the weather is fine and dry. Fuschia cuttings can be taken at almost any time of the year if given the right conditions so take a few more when you move the tender varieties in for over wintering.
