Gardening diary - our weekly guide and topical tips for your English country garden and allotment.
Week thirty eight September 16th - September 23rd
Main crop potatoes need to be harvested and sorted out, removing all damaged
tubers to the kitchen for immediate use. Soft fruit can be pruned any time
in the winter after leaf drop. Begin planting out spring cabbages, wall flowers,
winter pansies and sweet williams after applying a few handfuls of blood,
fish and bone fertilizer and if available dig in some well rotted compost
or farmyard manure. Standard fuchsias will need to be brought in under cover
before hard frosts arrive.
