years ago Europe was in the midst of a revolution. Young people
everywhere were committed to taking active part in changing the world
and
their lives with it, convinced they were forging the base for a new society.
Footage
from the Paris protests sets the scene as ten characters evoke the
internal struggles of the Parisian students, fighting for a better world
for themselves and their children through laughter and tears.
They
find themselves having to cope with fear, alienation from their
families, and the difficulties of creating genuine alternatives.
Seen
through the eyes of The Girls of May these events take on a lasting
significance for both protest movements and gender debates today, and
raise
questions about the nature of citizenship and democracy.
A
play which is by turns provoking, moving, funny and full of hope, but
which ultimately strikes the audience by the profound humanity of its
characters.
